Feeding and Swallowing
Speech therapists work with individuals who experience difficulties in swallowing or feeding. This can include assessing and treating issues related to oral motor function, texture aversions, and coordination of swallowing muscles.
Swallowing Disorders, or Dysphagia, can be acquired due to a stroke, or developmental due to muscle weakness/difficulty with coordination, or due to other medical causes. Individuals who are post-stroke may be prescribed compensatory techniques and/or enroll in therapy services to rehabilitate the muscles needed for swallowing.
Pediatric Feeding Disorders are defined as impaired oral intake that are due to underlying medical, psychosocial, feeding skill. Find out more at feedingmatters.org
