Choosing the Right Pacifier for Your Baby: Parent FAQ

Choosing the Right Pacifier for Your Baby: Parent FAQ

Milestones Matter Therapy, Feeding & Swallowing | Serving Galveston, Bellaire & Houston Families

Which pacifier should my baby use? Are they all created equal? Will it make my baby tired? Here's what parents ask us most.

Are all pacifiers the same?
No, pacifiers vary quite a bit, and the right choice often depends on your baby's age, feeding abilities, and personal preference.

What sizes do pacifiers come in?
Pacifiers are typically sized by age as your baby's mouth grows, with common ranges like newborn, 0–6 months, 6–12 months, and 12+ months. Most are made from a silicone material and can be found BPA-free.

What shapes do pacifiers come in?

  • Circular. A traditional, rounded shape.

  • Flat or bulb-like. Often recommended for breastfeeding babies, since the shape can feel more familiar.

  • Orthodontic. Curves upward, designed with the shape of the mouth in mind.

Will a pacifier interfere with breastfeeding?
It can, if introduced too early. It's best to establish breastfeeding and your milk supply before offering a pacifier, so your baby's early sucking practice stays focused on nursing.

Will a pacifier make my baby tired?
No. Pacifiers support non-nutritive sucking, sometimes called suckling, which is a soothing behavior, not a feeding one. It won't tire your baby out or affect their energy.

My baby is having feeding challenges. Does the pacifier shape matter?
It can. If feeding is challenging, try using a pacifier with the same shape as the nipple on your baby's bottle. Matching the shapes can help support the neurodevelopmental feeding pattern, the way your baby's tongue and oral structures move, and this approach often helps babies in the NICU or those born prematurely.

How do I keep a pacifier clean?
Sterilize pacifiers the same way you would bottles and pumping parts, following the same regular cleaning routine.
